| The Immune System, Oxygen and Water in the Human
Body - Saul Pressman
“Oxygen
is the most vital element required for human life and is the
key to good health. We can survive without
water for
a week, go without food for a month but we can only live a
few minutes without oxygen. All body activities require oxygen.
It is through oxidation that the body generates heat and energy
from its fuel (digested food etc) The process of oxidation enables
the body to rid itself of toxins and microbes. The effective
disposal of waste products from the body requires oxygen.
Our bodies consist of two-thirds water. Of that water 10% is
in the blood and 90% in the lymph. The water in our bodies is
in itself eight-ninths oxygen by weight; therefore our bodies
are composed of over 50% oxygen!
The
best way to optimise health is to oxygenate every cell in
your body”. Oxidation is central to the metabolic,
circulatory, respiratory, digestive, assimilatory and eliminatory
processes
of the body.
Oxygen
purifies the blood; keeping it free of cellular waste build-up.
Sufficient oxygen maintains the Immune System. Without
oxygen, regeneration and rejuvenation of the body’s cells
are impossible!”

| FREE
RADICALS, OZONE AND ANTIOXIDANTS – Dr
Horst Kief
First
of all, to the problem of oxygen radicals and antioxidants.
As with everything on our planet, both oxygen and antioxidants
have two sides; the positive and the negative. On one side,
free radicals will age us quicker; on the other side without
them
we have no immune system. It is not well known that oxygen
is bound to our haemoglobin as a superoxide anion, so the
oxygen
in our breathing process is already there as a radical.
It’s
the same with antioxidants. Antioxidants are often prescribed;
to be taken along with the use of ozone. These
are not simply opposites that cancel each other out, but rather,
a thoughtful optimisation, since most antioxidants have very
specific tasks. Vitamin E is active at the cell membrane. Vitamin
C is itself a radical that can speed the electron flow through
oxidation.
If ozone is taken for a long time at a high dose, it is wise
to take Vitamin A as a preventative measure to prevent the lack
of A and the problems associated with it.
In summary, both effects have their function and their place
in a symbiotic relationship.
THE FREE RADICAL THEORY - Dr Deepak Chopra
In
the mid-1950’s, Dr Denham Harman of the University
of Nebraska theorized that free radicals are an important cause
of aging at the cellular level.
This is believed to happen through a process called cross-linage,
a chemical reaction that locks up the outer atomic shells of
collagen. The cause of cross-linage is thought to be the tendency
of free radicals to bind indiscriminately with many vital molecules
in the body, including DNA. Cross-linkage is only one example
of the damage free radicals can inflict. They can also split
up molecules, garble information in cells, clog cell membranes,
promote cancerous mutations, and impair the function of the mitochondria
(the energy factories inside each cell).
Free radicals will attack almost any molecule; the extent of
the damage they do is so wide that the free radical theory of
aging has grown in popularity with each passing decade. Paradoxically,
free radicals are necessary to life. A free radical is really
a temporary stopping-point leading from one stable molecule to
another. The normal life span of such unstable particles is thousandths
of a second; millions of these fleeting molecules are emitted
in every cell as it burns sugar with life-giving oxygen.
Why
does the body produce free radicals? They are the natural
product of any chemical reaction and they fit into the body’s
overall balance. White blood cells use free radicals in hydrogen
peroxide to destroy invading bacteria and viruses. In that
role, the free radical’s tendency to latch onto anything
in sight, save your life daily. To protect itself from any
damage,
every
cell produces enzymes to neutralize free radicals. These free
radical scavengers include superoxide dismutase and catalase.
In recent times, people have been urged to take large amounts
of free radical scavengers in order to minimize cell damage.
However, the eminent Japanese medical investigator Dr Yukie Niwa,
himself a staunch proponent of the free radical theory, has demonstrated
in the laboratory that dosing a culture of cells with these products
does little to decrease free radical production. It would be
still less effective for a person to swallow these scavengers,
as most would be nullified by digestive juices long before they
got to the cells they were meant to protect.
The
whole life extension enterprise misses the point. The damage
caused by free radicals is secondary, not causal. In
its normal
state, the body controls free radicals as a matter of course.
Your body is not blindly fighting for its life against “bad” chemicals;
such a notion is far too simplistic. If you could view a cell
as it produces its myriad free radicals and myriad scavengers
at the same time, you would see the two floating around in
the same environment, not like loose cannons, but closely monitored
and controlled by the cell. Both are kept in balance and used,
as the cell requires a serene harmony.
It has not been shown that older people have necessarily higher
levels of free radicals in their cells or lower levels of scavengers.
Free radical damage is but a type of imbalance that can occur
at the cellular level.
If
the body’s generative powers are at an optimum, disorder
and chaos do not attack a cell. One of the ways to maintain the
body’s state of generative health is through exercise and
providing a good supply of oxygen to the cells. By actually building
muscle late in life, older people can significantly rejuvenate
their whole physiology, reversing the metabolic decline we have
come to see as normal. Physical fitness is also intimately linked
to one’s general well-being and attitude.

| Why is OZONE Treatment so safe?
Extract
from “Contemporary Ozone Applications” -
Kurt Donsbach
OZONE
treatment is safe because of an enzyme coating that surrounds
every cell. (which ozone does not penetrate) Bacteria and viruses
have no such coatings and are oxidized on contact with ozone.
Ozone also promotes the production of glutathione peroxidase,
catalase, reductase and super-oxide dismutase which are enzymes
forming the cell wall coating thus cellular immunity is enhanced.
Ozone also has a measurable benefit on the uptake and utilization
of oxygen through improved glycolysis in red blood cells, reduction
of clumping of red blood cells and the stimulation of mitochondrial
respiration. This improved cellular respiration is invaluable
in preventing cancer
In 1988 the following article started a mini-revolution in the
alternative health care community because of its information
on hydrogen peroxide and OZONE.
Extract
from ‘THE CAUSE AND PREVENTION OF CANCER – Saul
Pressman”
We now understand the chemical mechanisms of respiration and
fermentation at the cellular level and due to the work of Dr.
Otto Warburg, since 1926 we have known that when a cell is deprived
of oxygen, down to about 40% of normal, its respiration is irreversibly
damaged. This damage causes the cell to begin to ferment anaerobically
producing carbon monoxide and lactic acid and only one-sixth
of the energy of normal cellular aerobic oxidation takes place.
This oxygen deficiency (Hypoxia) can be caused by many factors.
Poison may reach the cell and prevent it from taking up oxygen
or the excretory duct of a gland becomes plugged up, as is
in the case of breast cancer where the lymph gland becomes
plugged up; whichever may be the cause the end result is the
same.
As
soon as the oxygen level to the cell is reduced and the cell
does not die the result will be cancer!
Frequent small doses of respiratory poison(s) are therefore
more dangerous than a single large dose thereof. With a single
large dose there is at least the chance that the cells will be
killed rather than become cancerous.
“All carcinogens impair cellular respiration”. In
this statement the word ‘carcinogen’ is an empty
word. The continual search for more carcinogenic substances
is an utter waste of time and money! This obscures the true
cause
of cancer; which is caused by oxygen starvation of the cell.
It also prevents the successful treatment of cancer because
of the misunderstanding of the cause of cancer.
To destroy cancer the introduction massive amounts of oxygen
at cellular level is needed.
Ozone has the ability to prevent cancer. If sufficient oxygen
is provided to the cells so that it never drops below 40% the
cells will stay healthy. This will bar the need for chemical
or radiation poisoning. It is as simple (and difficult) as that.
Many people today are using ozone generators to keep their cellular
oxygen levels high in order to prevent disease.
Ozone may be taken in many ways: You can drink ozonated water,
introduce it into the ear, allow ozone to enter through the skin
etc.

Extract
from “AIDS,
CANCER CURED BY HYPER-OXYGENATION”
By Waves Forest
Several dozen AIDS patients have not only reversed their death
sentences, but are back at work, completely free of the disease.
They destroyed the virus in their blood by hyper-oxygenation,
known in its various forms as oxygen therapy, bio-oxidative therapy
or auto-haemotherapy.
This is a simple, inexpensive and very broad spectrum, healing
process that many feel could force a complete overhaul of the
medical industry. The two basic types of oxygen therapy are blood
infusion and absorption of oxygen water (hydrogen peroxide) at
very low concentrations.
It
turns out that the AIDS virus cannot tolerate high levels of
oxygen in their victim’s blood. Not only that, every
other disease organism tested so far, apparently has the same
weakness. Even cancer growths contract and disappear when the
oxygen saturation is sufficiently increased in the fluids surrounding
them, since they are anaerobic.
AIDS,
herpes, hepatitis, Epstein Barr, cytomegalovirus and other
lipid envelope viruses are readily destroyed by hyper-oxygenating
the patient’s blood with OZONE. This was demonstrated
by, among others, Dr. Horst Kief in Bad Hersfeld, Germany.
Dr.
Kief has already cured a number of AIDS victims by drawing
blood, infusing it with OZONE and returning it to the patient
at regular intervals until all of the virus is gone. Dr. S
Rilling
of Stuttgart, and DR. Renate Viebahn of Iffezheim, are among
the growing number of physicians who have obtained similar
results
with their patients
Ozone Blood Treatment
OZONE
overcomes the AIDS virus by a fundamentally different process
than that which is usually attempted with drugs. Instead of
burdening the liver and immune system with more elaborate toxic
substances, OZONE simply oxidizes the molecules in the shell
of the virus.
As
the OZONE molecules dissolve into the blood they give up their
3rd oxygen atom, releasing considerable energy that destroys
all
lipid-envelope viruses; apparently most other disease organisms
as well while leaving blood cells unharmed.
It oxygenates the blood to a greater degree than is normally
achieved, what with poor air and sluggish breathing habits. The
disease will not return, as long as the patient maintains his
blood in an oxygen-positive state.
If
this is so, it follows that more the profit-fixated
elements of the medical establishment will not be too thrilled
about the recent surge of interest in oxygen therapies. The
drug industry has expanded enormously since Word War II, while
America’s
level of health has dropped from the world’s highest
to the lowest among the industrialised nations. It does look
as
if the bottom line has been money and not health, for a long
time!”

| WHAT IS MSM AND WHAT HAS OXYGEN
TO DO WITH IT?
MSM – Methyl
Sulfonyl Methane
According to Saul Pressman MSM is extracted from DMSO by the
process of adding another oxygen molecule to it so that is separates
the dimethyl solvent from the sulphur. The sulphur left after
this process is a biologically active sulphur, and it is the
active ingredient in DMSO.
DMSO
is a by-product of the timber industry. At one time Crown
Zellerbach attempted to get rid of this ‘waste’ by
spraying it on dirt roads to compact the earth. This caused
problems, because animals of every description would come and
lick it all
up. The deer would lick six-inch potholes in the road. Dr Stanley
Jacob of the Oregon Health Sciences University observed this
and later identified this substance as DMSO, a healing penetrant
that instantly soaks in through the skin and reduces pain.
Eventually, Dr Jacob discovered that the active healing agent
in DMSO is
MSM.
MSM, the sulphur-bearing amino acid, is available to the cell
and creates a flexible bond. Cells with insufficient MSM lose
their ability to flex. Cells that have lost their ability to
flex cause a wrinkle.
Sulphur
has a vital relationship with protein, since sulphur is found
in the amino acids methionine, cystine and cysteine.
The sulphur-bearing amino acids are absolutely essential to
health. Sulphur acts as an activator with all the B Vitamins,
thiamine,
biotin, Vitamin C and panthothenic acid. Sulphur aids the liver
in bile secretion and helps maintain the overall body balance
between acidity and alkalinity. Sulphur plays a role in carbohydrate
metabolism, which is significant for controlling hypoglycaemia
and diabetes. The lack of biological sulphur in the body results
in low insulin production. Sulphur is a component of insulin,
which is secreted by the pancreas for metabolising carbohydrates.
Sulphur keeps hair, nails and skin healthy. In addition, sulphur
plays an important part in cell respiration and assimilation.
MSM is therefore essential and is thus found in all living
organisms.
Medical
research has proven that a minimal concentration of MSM is
critical to function and structure, and that the concentration
drops as time passes, directly contributing to aging. There
has
been extensive medical testing over the last ten years on the
use of MSM in the diet. Some diseases considered irreversible,
such as emphysema, have been overcome through use of supplemental
MSM. Other diseases treated with excellent results are: pyorrhoea,
skin burns and scars, eczema, psoriasis, dandruff, loss of
hair, PMS, diabetes, hyperactivity, constipation, parasites,
arthritis,
carpal tunnel syndrome, candida, chronic fatigue syndrome,
Epstein-Barr and low energy. MSM helps with the oxygenation
of cells and free
radical scavenging, and is thus anti-aging.
MSM
occurs in fresh fruit and vegetables, raw milk, wheat grass
juice and aloe vera. There is no toxic dose, and the body will
excrete an-needed MSM.
Because
it helps in the production of methionine, a basic liver enzyme,
MSM is very important to proper digestion and assimilation
of food. The liver cannot do its job of regulating enzymes
and
metering sugar and filtering out toxins properly without MSM.
It is of little use to increase dosages of vitamins and minerals
when they will just be excreted. Daily supplementation with
MSM will ensure proper absorption of all nutrients with the
corresponding
betterment of health.

Since
the 1960’s the increasing pollution of surface
water through chemical substances has developed into a massive
problem:
subsequently, the highly disinfectant properties of ozone have
come back under consideration, and the inclusion of an ozone
processing phase in water treatment is gaining considerably
in importance. The following properties make ozone one of the
most
important cleaning and disinfecting agents:
Macromolecules can be broken down as a result of its powerful
oxidative effect.
Its capacity to react with compounds which cannot be broken
down by biological agents or otherwise be integrated into the
biological process or produce substances available for further
processing, eg by bacteria, is of paramount importance.
Highly poisonous aromatics and heteroaromatics are destroyed,
and can thus be removed by flocculation and filtered out.
And finally, its ability to kill all kinds of bacteria and viruses
makes ozone one of the most important agents in the cleansing
and (re) treatment of waste water.

| Extracts
from “THE USE OF OZONE IN MEDICINE” - by Dr. R Viebahn-Haensler Diabetic gangrene - p77
As
additive therapy in diabetic gangrene, ozone therapy can be
administered in the form of low-pressure O3 gas application
under the suction cup according to localization, as described
with the example of a heel ulcer.
The
low-pressure method produces an acceleration in the healing
process because, in the addition, the action of the ozone due
to the sub atmospheric pressure causes a hyperemization and
a “loosening” of
the tissue, this insuring an improved diffusion of the ozone/oxygen
gas mixture.
In
exceptional cases, a normal pressure (normobaric) procedure
can be applied; the transcutaneous ozone gas “bath” under
an ozone-resistant plastic bag or foil.
As
with all topical forms of O3 application, the simultaneous
use of water is particularly important, as “dry” ozone
is neither bactericidal nor does it have wound-healing properties.
|
| |

Aterial circulatory disorders with extensive ulcers of the heel (Rokitansky 1982)
|
| |
| Peripheral
arterial circulatory disorders – p 67 -68 A
characteristic individual case in which an amputation at
the upper thigh could be avoided is illustrated in Figure
20a
and
20b hereunder: in this instance a female patient aged 68 who
suffered from diabetes presented herself with an almost hand-sized
ulcer on her heel and increasing difficulties, expressed for
example by a maximum walking distance of only 30 to 80 meters
(c 100 – 264 feet). After systemic and local ozone treatment
in the transcutaneous immersion bag (“ozone bath”)
a complete healing was achieved within 4 months; after dismissal
from hospital, she was able to walk home without any signs
of intermittent claudication (Rokitansky - 1982).
From the vascular surgery department of a hospital in Milan
(Italy) Mattassi (1981) reported the results of treatment in
over 113 cases with similar results.
Decubitus
(bedsores and ulcers) – p73
The following quotation is a good introduction to the subject;
“As it is eminently practical, treatment with low-pressure
ozone is suitable and indicated in every form of decubitus. The
pronounced local hyperemization, produced both as a result of
the low pressure and the effect of ozone on the open wound, contribute
to accelerated healing. In fact, the method is far superior to
the usually indicated circulatory stimulation via side positioning … Stages
II through IV – ie skin defects – represent an
absolute indication (for ozone); it is here that the two most
important
component factors of its effect, ie hyperemization and disinfection,
can attain their greatest efficiency when applied below atmospheric
pressure. This is of particular importance in the advanced
stages III and IV: necroses are dissolved, and the wounds supplied
with
additional oxygen”
(Werkmeister 1995).
Here,
Werkmeister discusses the results of a study he carried out
in 214 cases of decubitus, and analyses treatment results
over the period from 1975 through 1988, whereby a closing of
the wound at a rate of 80 – 100% could be still obtained
in 40% of participants (85 patients), all of whom were in a
severe and/or advanced stage of the disease
|
| |

Treatment for decubitus using low-pressure ozone gas irrigation
according to Werkmeister
|
| |
| An
investigation was reported on by Mattassi, involving 20 patients,
of whom 9 suffered from herpes zoster and 11 from herpes simplex.
A complete healing of the skin lesions were obtained in all herpes
zoster patients after systemic ozone treatment lasting over five
to ten days. In one case of extensive herpes in the trigeminal
region with keratitis, healing was obtained within 10 days, although
a permanent opacity of the keratinous tissue remained.
Six of the herpes simplex patients were treated immediately
after appearance of the inflammation, so that success was already
noticeable 24 to 36 hours later, after only one to two treatments.
As so often, it is a matter of basic principle here as well:
the sooner therapy is started, the better the results obtained.
“We have succeeded in shortening the development of the
disease to an astounding extent, both in herpes simplex and in
herpes zoster, the fact that we find no recurrences of herpes
labialis ought to indicate a definitive healing.” (Mattassi
1981).
Six of the herpes simplex patients were treated immediately

noticeable 24 to 36 hours later, after only one to two treatments.
1981).

| General
weakened immune resistance - p86
Once
Bocci was able to demonstrate that ozone produces a physiological
release of cytokins in whole blood,
ozone therapy started to
move away from being a purely empirical method: indeed, quite
a number of its therapeutical effects have now become explainable
and demonstrable. Among other factors, it is considered responsible
for accelerating wound healing processes; it also plays a part,
for example, in regenerating cartilage tissues where regenerative
conditions of the joints are present. As a general fact, we can
talk about an induction of “activating” and “suppressive” cytokins
in immunomodulation or restoration of a disturbed immune status.

| Cerebral
Circulatory Disorders – p 70 In
a group of 43 patients with acute stroke, extracorporeal
ozone treatment of the blood was carried out with 3 000 µg
in 50 to 100 ml of the patient’s own blood and, as far
as possible, repeated over the following days. According to
his or her condition, the patient then received corresponding
further
treatment in hospital.
Results:
With a typification of post-apoplectic syndrome in 3 stages,
the following results could be obtained: in 37 patients bodily
functions (including fine motor control) could be completely
restored (T1); in 6 patients this function remained disordered,
although the general motor function was retained (T2). All
patients could be spared the third stage (T3) with its typical
spastic conditions and severest forms of restriction. None
of the patients died as a direct result of the stroke.
The nuclear resonance (NMR) pictures of 9 patients, compared
with those of the patients not treated with medical ozone, are
noticeable for a particularly small scar formation, from which
a lower incidence of functional disorders in these patients becomes
understandable.
Even
if the number of cases is very small and these results need
a clinically controlled study for confirmation, it is
particularly noticeable that none of the patients could be
classified as being “most
severely” incapacitated.
Effect:
Due to the known immediate activation of cellular metabolism
with a rise in ATP – as well as an increased 2,3-DPG
level in the red blood cells – a rapid subsidence of
the collateral edema is being discussed, which is accompanied
by a repolarisation of those cells still capable of reactivation.
“In
the inflammation cascade process, this means that stage 1,
the edema formation is rapidly overcome. The 2nd stage
with its activation of the tissue mast cells is thus shortened,
and the 3rd phase ie collagen formation is reduced through
insufficient activation. In the brain, the activation of
astrocytes, which
are responsible for postischemic scar formation, has also avoided
the secondary zone of the stroke”
(Wasser - 1995)

| ADDITIVE
THERAPY IN CARCINOGENIC CONDITIONS
Although
the use of medical ozone is principally to be understood
as a complementary therapeutic procedure,
this principle is
particularly valid when we turn to cancer therapy. The aim
is to lengthen
or maintain the effects of classical therapy, and to improve
a patient’s well-being, life style and life quality.
With our new knowledge about the activation of immunocompetent
cells by ozone, we now have a rationale for the complementary
treatment of such conditions with ozone; a physiological release
of cytokins in the microenvironment of different immunocompetent
cells, and an increase or improvement in immune restoration is
the result.
GERIATRIC CONDITIONS
General revitalization
In
general, elderly persons respond very well to a treatment
series
of 6 to 10 autohaemotherapy sessions.
This becomes quickly
noticeable in the improvement of the patients’ general
condition, and a specific revitalization.
Apart from activating immunocompetent cells and producing the
corresponding cytokins, a metabolic activation of the red blood
cells and the oxygen-releasing effect of ozone may also be held
responsible for this improvement in relative well-being.
The
activation of the organism’s own
antioxidants and the consequently heightened antioxidative
capacity of the organism
could be of importance in delaying aging processes. If, for
example, the activity of superoxide dismutase is increased
an increased
number of superoxide radicals are scavenged off, the formation
of OH radicals is reduced, the degenerative processes thus
slowed down.
The three most important effects of medical ozone application
are of great importance in geriatric treatment and ozone biology,
these being:
|
| |
1.
Activation of immunocompetent cells
2. Activation of red blood cell (RBC) metabolism, resulting in
an improved oxygen release
and
3. Activation of enzymatic and improvement in antioxidative
capacity.

| Age-related
macular degeneration
A
small-scale study on this subject was initiated by Bocci
in 1997: 34 patients (of which 17 suffered from
the dry and
17 from
the humid form of macular degeneration) received a series
of 12 to 15 major O3 autohemotherapy treatments, whereby
their
visual acuity was tested over a period of 12 months. The
results may be viewed as an encouragement to ophthalmologists
with private practices – as well as those in clinics – to
apply ozone therapy where invasive methods including laser
therapy have proved to be unsuccessful.
In
8 of these patients, using superoxide dismutase as an example,
changes in antioxidative effect were monitored; a practically
continuous rise throughout a series of 15 major autohemotherapeutic
applications can be seen, whereas the 2,3 DPG level
showed no significant change.

| Inflammatory
conditions of the joints
Table 13 shows the results of a small pilot study conducted
by Siemsen involving 38 patients.
Intraarticular
and periarticular injections were found to be without any
effect in 6 patients suffering from shoulder joint
diseases. All other patients declared themselves to be
at least satisfied with the treatment they received. According
to the
degree of severity of the disease involved, 1 to 20 injections
with O3 at quantities of 50-to 500 µg ozone were used.
The effect of ozone in intra-articular injection is discussed
in Chapter
7.1 and Table 12.
In a large-scale
study involving 326 patients, Riva reports on the successes
obtained applying intraarticular knee injections
with ozone/oxygen mixtures.
The major proportion, involving 242 patients, consisted of gonarthroses,
of which 173 cases were without pronounced bone deformation (Group
B) and 69 cases with bone deformations (Group C). It was found
that, 3 to 4 weeks after the start of treatment, knee motility
increased at the same rate as painfulness subsided (Group B).
After the ozone therapy series, all patients received electrotherapy
and massage. In the 69 patients of Group C, therapy success was
delayed on account of the advances stage of the disease. Success
was very limited in 47 of these patients after the first ozone
injection series. A repeated application without additional therapy
was not indicated; in these cases, steroids were additionally
administered.
The most
successful treatment was that of posttraumatic conditions
of the knee (Group A) as observed in 84 patients; after
the first ozone therapy series (twice a week with 20 ml and
an ozone concentration
of 10 µg/ml over a period from 5 to 6 weeks), 20% of
these patients showed a complete restoration and needed no
further therapeutical
measures, not even after two years of monthly follow-up
examination. In 80% of these patients, the knee was completely
restored, so
that electrotherapy and massage were excluded as further
therapeutical measures (Riva 1996).

| Adenosine
triphosphate ATP
During
the increase in glycolosis rates in the red blood cell under
ozone application, the content of adenosine triphosphate
also rises. An increase in ATP may be interpreted as a general
activation of cell metabolism. It is possible that an ozone-induced
rise in red blood cell ATP is responsible in stabilising the
membrane potential and improving mechanical resistance (Bayer
et al 1993). Minute quantities of extracellular ATP, which
are considered as being possibly responsible for a series of
rapidly
occurring “ozone reactions”, such as vasodilation
and availability of energetic reserves and inflammatory processes,
are also being discussed (Wasser 1995).
2, 3 - Diphosphoglycerate – p 117
The deoxygenating
substance 2,3-DPG plays a special part in the functionality
of the red blood cell: as a transporter of
oxygen, it has to deposit the oxygen (O2) it carries at the
site where it is needed for further use. The affinity of haemoglobin
to oxygen depends, however, a great deal on 2,3-DPG. In a healthy
system this 2,3-DPG is present at the same molar quantities
as
haemoglobin itself is; in fact, it can slip into the center
of the quartary structure of haemoglobin, at the same time
releasing four oxygen molecules:
Hb (O2)4
+ 2,3 DPG 2
Hb • 2,3 - DPG + 4 02
The 2,3-DPG lowers oxygen affinity by a factor of 26, or in
other words, the oxygen-binding curve is increasingly shifted
to the right as the 2,3-DPG content rises (Stryer - 1992).
The oxygen-releasing
effect of ozone thus means the red blood cell can release its
oxygen more easily, which results in improved
oxygen supply to the peripheries. If this release of oxygen
is reduced due to a 2,3-DPG content, which is too low or fluctuates
too greatly (in diabetics for example), O3 application here
means
a refunctionalization of the RBC (red blood cells) – and
thus an improved oxygen release.
The
Action of Ozone on Immunocompetent Cells – p 125
As far as the white blood cell (WBC) status is concerned, an
immunomodulatory effect of ozone on the basis of empirical data
has been under discussion for decades now. Thus, the improved
well being of elderly patients, or cancer patients, after a series
of treatments with ozone is attributed to its immunoactivating
effect. Since Bocci and his team investigated ozone and its effect
on immunocompetent cells, we now have exact results contributing
to our understanding as to how ozone acts in the human organism;
in the meantime a large number of publications on this subject
has become available.
Cytokine
Induction – p
126
Among the immunocompetent cells, the T4 lymphocytes (TH1) occupy
a key position. Activated by the macrophages they produce cytokins,
which initiate intercellular communication in their function
as messengers. For example we find interleukin-2, which is responsible
for a large number of functions such as the activation of more
R4 lymphocytes to become cytotoxic killer cells, or of B-lymphocytes
to produce specific antibodies. In this way, activated helper
cells set off a whole cascade of immune reactions.
In treated, whole blood, ozone is in a position to assume the
activation of immunocompetent cells directly, ie it can produce
a specific immunoactivation.
Properties
and Effect – p 148 and 149
Medical ozone has highly pronounced bactericidal, fungicidal
and virostatic properties, and is thus widely used in disinfecting
infected wounds, as well as in bacterially and virally produced
diseases.
Its ability to stimulate the circulation is used in the treatment
of circulatory disorders and makes it valuable in revitalising
organic functions.
When administered
at low concentration, the organism’s
own resistance is mobilised, ie ozone (re) activates the immune
system.
As a response
to this activation through ozone, the body’s
immune cells produced special messengers called cytokins (including
important mediators such as interferones or interleukins).
These inform other immune cells, setting off a cascade of positive
changes throughout the immune system, which is stimulated to
resist diseases for example. This means that the application
of medical ozone is extremely useful for immune activation
in
patients with a low immune status and/or immune deficit.
Circulatory
Disorders – p 151 and 152
In this therapeutical
category, ozone shows its greatest efficacy in arterial circulatory
disorders characterised by a sensation
of heaviness and coldness and/or pains in the legs, especially
when walking. In fact, patients affected are only able to cover
relatively short distances (well known as smoker’s leg
or intermittent claudication) – a signal of alarm. In
fact this form of treatment has avoided amputations in a large
number
of clinically recorded cases.
|
| |
|
|
| |
Infected
Wounds
“Open leg” ulcers
(ulcus cruris), bed sores (decubitus) and burns are successfully
treated
by ozone in practically
all cases. Clinical studies have shown that even very severe
cases
(eg gangrene, local necrosis) can obtain restoration.
Geriatric (age-related) Conditions
Thanks to its general revitalising capacity (including nerve
and brain functions), ozone can be used successfully for poor
concentration, forgetfulness, general reductions in mental and
physical performance, insecurity in walking (balancing problems)
and clinical dizziness or vertigo. Elderly persons in particular
experience an improvement in well-being and life quality.
Macular Degeneration
O3 is also used to exert a positive influence on weak sight
(decreasing visual acuity) due to age-related retinal detachment.
Intestinal Conditions
Inflammatory conditions of the large (eg colitis) and small
intestines, fistulas and proctitis (inflammation of the rectum).
A local application of ozone gas introduced via insufflation
provides rapid relief to many such unpleasant and inconvenient
conditions.
Virus-produced Diseases
A series of clinical trials and pharmacological studies are
able to demonstrate the good success rate of ozone treatment
in painful, virus-produced conditions such as hepatitis and herpes.
The term of the diseases is greatly shortened, healing is more
efficient, and the patient is rapidly restored to his/her original
well-being.
Rheumatism/Arthritis
In
the whole complex of “rheumatic/arthritic” conditions,
all of which attack the skeletal and locomotory systems
to a varying degree, ozone successfully causes pain and
inflammation
to subside. Repeated treatment can even produce permanent
restoration!
Ozonized
olive oil – p 62
In Germany and a number of other European countries, ozonized
olive oil can be obtained on prescription from a number of pharmacies
in different preparation forms. In contrast to ozone solo, which
has a very short half life, this ozonized product can be stored
for a considerable time when specific precaution are taken; its
active ingredients are ozonides and peroxides (Washuttl/Viebahn
1982-1987).
Compared
with directly applied ozone, its fungicidal and bacterial
effects are slower; the inactivation of micro-organisms
in ozonized water, for example, takes place within seconds,
whereas
ozonized olive oil requires a number of hours to produce
the same effect due to its peroxidic products.
Thanks to its fungicidal and bactericidal effect, particularly
in extensive fungoid/mycotic skin infections, ozonized olive
oil is used locally for disinfecting lesions and promoting their
healing.
The
application of ozonized olive oil – p
80
Due
to the low reactivity of ozonides and peroxides in an aqueous
medium, the fungicidal and bactericidal
properties
of ozone do
not become noticeable until after a specific latent period.
Ozonized olive oil is thus especially useful when combined
with transcutaneous
(“O3 bath”) ozone treatment and a simultaneous
application of ozonized treatment is reserved to the private
practice or
clinic, ozonized olive oil can be used at home for further
treatment, to complement and continue the effect of O3
applied by a different
method.
Animal Model
In
an animal experiment as model, Schulz was able to demonstrate
its wound-healing effect in the
case of both mechanical and
thermic lesions; rapid wound healing, a hyperemizing effect
(ear skin
temperatures) and, histologically, a “more mature” granulation
tissue were found.
Use in gynaecology: vaginal candidiasis
In 20 patients, “recurrent candidal vaginitis:
was evidenced in bacteriological cultures (average
age 26 years,
complaints;
fluor vaginalis pruritus vaginae);they all received treatment
with ozonized olive oil for 5 days, as a previous treatment
had been unsuccessful (Clotrimazol).
Already on the 2nd day of treatment, there was a noticeable improvement
in subjective complaints so that, after the 5th day of treatment,
all patients were subjectively free of complaints; an investigation
of native samples only proved to be candida positive in 2 of
the total (2) cases.
The elegant advantage of this treatment is that it can be administered
by the patients themselves when at home. (Schonbauer et al.).
Circumscribed osteitis (ostitis circumscripta):
In a controlled study by Filippi, 65 patients suffering from circumscribed
osteitis in the lower jaw occurring after surgical removal of a wisdom tooth
received local treatment with ozonized olive oil versus the conventional chlorphenol/
camphor/menthol method.
In the context of both single and combined therapy, a more markedly rapid therapy
success was obtained on application of the ozone-enriched preparation, and
the duration of treatment could be shortened on average by more than 2 days
when ozonized olive oil was used.
Recommendation:
Ozonized olive oil should only be applied locally, and spread in the form of
a thin layer over the affected area once to twice per day. Bandages or drainage
application should be changed daily. The characteristic smell of ozone may
prove to be slightly irritating when it is applied in the mouth and facial
regions.
External Ulcers and Skin Lesions - p72
The fungicidal, virucidal and bactericidal properties of ozone
make the medical ozone/oxygen mixture a valuable therapeutic
agent in the cleaning and disinfection of wounds; its specific,
stimulant effect on the circulatory system improves and accelerates
wound healing. Using a radiation ulcer as his model, Werkmeister
was able to demonstrate the rapid wound-cleansing effect of ozone
in a very impressive manner.
Ozone therapy is particularly indicated in all infected wounds,
in dermatomycoses, weeping eczemas, ulcus cruris, decubitus ulcers,
and all badly healing wounds.
Chronic
bad wound healing after irradiation – p76
A variation on the low-pressure treatment described above is
reported by Sader, who successfully used a suction cap for chronically
disturbed and/or delayed wound-healing processes in the maxillary
region.
Especially in patients following radiation therapy for malignant
tumours in the buccal, maxillary and facial areas, considerable
secondary problems and/or delays in would healing occur.
Thus
in order to avoid a complete or even a partial resection/excision
in the maxillary region,
Sader, conducted a “clinical pilot
study in 11 previously irradiated patients with superficial osteoradionecrosis,
in whom no rapid healing could be obtained with conservative
and minimal surgical therapy methods”. Other complementary
therapeutic measures, such as low-pressure ozone application,
were not accessible to all patients – and those suffering
from ostitic changes at a deeper level were also excluded.
Using
local low-pressure ozone gas therapy, it was here possible
to achieve healing in 9 out of 11
cases which, in the light
of their severity – even if we are here dealing with a purely
case related model – is remarkable; in other words,
active O3 support protected these patients from the massive
resection
of the lower jaw which would otherwise have had to take
place, involving the dreaded esthetic and functional problems.
Ulcus cruris - p78
In
topical ozone treatment as a complementary/additive measure
for
ulcus cruris, we should work in a pressure
free system
and not with the low-pressure ozone “boot”, using either
plastic bag or applying ozonized water. In principle, the method
is as follows: first treat the super infected ulcer with high
ozone concentration in a transcutaneous gas bath (ozone immersion
system), and then – after wound cleansing accompanied
by incipient epithelialization and granulation - drastically
reduce
the concentration to values around 20ug/ml, or change over
to ozonized water alone. Here, the ozonized water combines
the advantages
of providing an optimum environment for O3 and of stimulating
(and thus accelerating) the wound healing process when
applied at a concentration range of 20ug per ml water.
Treatment
of burns – p79
Medical ozone/oxygen mixtures can be used very effectively in
severe burns. In the presence of absolutely sterile water, first
of all use the transcutaneous gas bath at high O3 concentration
to prevent possible super infections; then reduce the concentration
to the lower levels ideal for wound healing; this process can
be completed to great advantage by applying compresses with ozonized
water. During the first week, treatment on a day-today basis
is mostly indicated; the frequency can then be reduced to three
or two treatment sessions per week. The special advantage of
this method is seen in the rapid subsidence (decongestion) of
edemas, swelling etc, and quick pain relief.

| Extract
from - Oxygen Health Systems – Alternative Healthcare
Oxygen therapy is an umbrella for a number of closely related
cutting edge therapies that seek to promote healing by flooding
the body with oxygen. Ozone therapy is probably the most powerful
of the Oxygen therapies.
Poor immunity, constant tiredness, colds and flu’s, and
low vitality are primarily caused by oxygen starvation – people
are tired, low in energy, susceptible to viruses and so on
because their bodies are starved of oxygen. People with asthma
and bronchitis
are starved of oxygen and usually respond well to this therapy.
Headaches and migraine sufferers also report benefits (are
these conditions caused by lack of oxygen to the brain?). What
we do
know is that when the body is flooded with oxygen, people consistently
report that their health problems go away.
Ozone therapy can be beneficial to most chronic illnesses as
well as some acute infections. Today, over 7 000 German Physicians
use ozone therapy in their offices to perform 6 million chronic
illness treatments annually.
In the last several years there have been laws passed in 10
states to protect their physicians from state medical board
actions for using controversial therapies. These laws allow
non-FDA (Food
and Drug Administration in America) approved therapies (such
as ozone therapy) to be used between a physician and his patient
as long as “duel-consent” is in place and the patient
has been thoroughly informed. The states that have passed these
laws are:

Georgia
-
Texas
